The Power of Words Essay -- Psychology Essays

The Power of WordsCommunication and language are not always synonymous. Gesticulations and facial expression can convey certain messages that often stigma verbal expression unnecessary. Although I appreciate the endless possibilities that are associated with speaking, our primary means of communication, I have discovered that the human capacity for speech office not be as extremely innate as the linguist Noam Chomsky claimed. A few years ago, I had the privilege of encountering a thirty-five year-old cleaning woman named Joann at a summer camp for adults with multiple disabilities. Being extremely autistic, Joann was unable to close her mouth, let alone form distinguishable words. Instead of talking, her hint method of communication was to make clicks and guttural noises when she was upset or wanted something. Unlike the case of Genie, who was reared in a small room without human contact, Joann and many an(prenominal) other autistic people are not raised in silence and should hav e theoretically learned to talk (as per Chomskys theory). The camp counselors encouraged Joanns attempts at speech and tried to build her verbal skills, but they were never able to progress beyond monosyllabic words. Why wasnt she able to speak and why did they burst? To a certain extent, language is innate, but Daniel Dennett trivialized the depth and complexity of linguistics. He wrote, ...its so effortless...for even slow children to learn to speak. They arent really learning at all, any much than birds learn their feathers. Language, and feathers, just develop in species... (Dennett 388). This generalization is horribly arrogant and unfair to people like Joann, for whom any form of verbal communication is just effortless. I think that some form of learn... ...heoretically could be speaking or trying to covey some message when she makes those utterances, as if she had completely bypassed the evolution of clicks into words. It has been suggested by psychologists that there is a critical period for language acquisition which theorizes that children lose the capacity to readily absorb new languages by the end of their toddler years. The point that children are able to learn new languages so quickly shows that to some extent, language is innate, but speech is not acquired so easily. Joann will probably never be able to speak like other people, but there exists the possibility of her understanding much more than Dennett would give her credit for. Works CitedDennett, Daniel C. Jane Eyre: An Unconventional Heroine Essay

Ms. Eyre is one of those heroines who refuse to blend into the traditional female position of subservience and who stand up for her beliefsExplore how the female position is bear witnessed.Jane Eyre was written by Charlotte Bronte and was first published in 1847 in the twee era. During this period, women were expected to remain at home and their fourth dimension was to be spent taking care of household duties and their children. Females were regarded as properties rather than as humans they either belonged to their fathers or their husbands. As they were believed to be incapable of hold up on their own, they had no independence. Permission was required for almost everything and they were expected to abide by rules set out by their owners. Men were considered to be very a lot superior to women and they were to be treated with respect by the latter, whether they agreed with their views or not. In general terms, societys depiction of a conventional fair sex was very different to what it is now, so it is not surprising that modern readers may find their attitudes as shocking.Although Jane Eyre was written during this period, Bronte portrays her flake in a very bohemian way, following the trends of the Gothic genre. The casing of Jane is used to chiefly challenge the Victorian attitudes towards women, theology and class. The fact that Bronte chooses a female character to portray her views is surprising to the Victorian reader. During that period, inequality amongst the genders prevented the views of females from being have a bun in the ovened, and if expressed, they were not regarded with respect. Expressing their ideas in any way was extremely unconventional as it would have been shocking for a woman to be passionate. By using Jane as a device to put forward her views, Bronte challenges the idea that women did not have views worth considering.Jane is a character who is sure of herself and her demeanour is described as a picture of passion. However, t he reader dropnot deny she is very intelligent and that she has a very good judgement of character. Janes uniqueness is noticeable from the start. Even as a child, she is different from her cousins at Gateshead. Instead of taking pleasure in playing, she prefers reading books such as Goldsmiths tale of Rome and Gullivers Travels and forming opinions on the characters involved. Jane has a strong wish to travel and see the lands that she reads about, showing that women feel just as men feel. Here Bronte uses Jane to present the idea that women are capable of being intelligent that they can form right judgements and that they have ambitions and dreams, just as men do.This idea is reinforced throughout the novel, especially when it comes to religion. Bronte makes the character of Jane Eyre stand up for her beliefs by challenge the views of men. She uses this character to challenge different ideas about religion. Mr Brocklehurst, the headmaster of Lowood Institution (her second home), maintains the hypocrisy in the Evangelical Movement and the forceful countenance of men. When referring to his students, he feels the need not to accustom them to habits of luxury and indulgence, nevertheless to encourage spiritual edification to the pupils by make them suffer temporary privation, contradicting his own luxurious lifestyle.Jane emphasises the ridiculous in his portrayal and his concepts on religion are mocked through the depiction of his hypocritical sermons, suggesting that this interpretation of Christianity essential not be taken seriously. Brocklehurst fails to influence the beliefs of Jane, and in roughly(prenominal) ways, her friend Helen Burns. This character conveys a different concept one of endurance and peace mainly based on the New Testament idea of loving those who hate you. Once again, Jane is not satisfied with this interpretation of religion and insists that she should resist those who punish me unjustly. The threesome interpretation of relig ion is represented by St John Rivers, who believes in sacrificing emotional needs for Christianity, which Jane also rejects (by rejecting his proposal).Bronte makes Jane Eyre reject the ideas imposed by male characters, emphasising her controversialist personality. Jane forms a more reasonable and agreeable interpretation of religion than male characters, and Helen in not influenced by Mr Brocklehursts cruelty. Bronte proposes another interpretation through this character that religion does not require you to deny yourself completely that it can be used as a guide in circumstances beyond human control. By doing this, Bronte shows that females have the ability to form their own opinions on complex ideas, such as religion and that they can form them independently even under the blackmail of forceful authority. The idea that woman are capable of being independent is established when she opposes Mr Rochesters efforts to make the world acknowledge you a beauty by pointing out that she wi ll not be herself if he succeeds, but an ape in a harlequins jacket. Here Jane is refusing to be objectified and changed even by the man she lie withs. Bronte presents an independent woman who is sure of herself, and who wants to retain her individuality at any cost. Although Jane is a governess, she makes it straighten that Mr Rochester doesnt have a right to drop her and that she is equal to him in many ways. Also, Jane maintains her dignity by refusing to marry Mr Rochester. Bronte shows that women are capable of being respectable and that they are not always lead by their emotions. This causes Jane to take courage and leave Mr Rochester, disregarding the Victorian idea that women should do as men wish. While it could be argued that Jane surrenders to the Victorian expectations by returning to Mr Rochester, it is clear that she is not returning to him because she cannot survive on her own. Circumstances change, making Jane rich. She returns to Mr Rochester as an equal in every way (whereas previously she was aware of their social difference), and she returns for love more than anything else.Besides Jane, Bronte uses the characters of Miss Temple and Diana and Mary Rivers to portray that women are not inferior to men. The mentioned characters influence Jane and are involved in the development of her character as an independent woman, as she calls herself by the end. Miss Temple is her role model and helps her to realise that she does not have to give in to forced authority that she must stand up for what is right. In many ways, Miss Temple gives Jane courage for the future. She goes against Mr Brocklehursts orders and sympathises with the girls who are treated cruelly.Apart from feeling differently to him, she takes act by giving the girls a lunch, consisting of bread and cheese, twice and fearlessly takes responsibility for it. She is also used represent what Bronte believes to be the true interpretation of Christianity, mainly by giving her a strong sen se of injustice in the running of Lowood Institution. While Miss Temple inspires Jane to become independent and to be just, Mary and Diana Rivers inspire Jane to improve her knowledge and to become more intelligent. Jane followed in the path of knowledge they had trodden before me, suggesting that she wants to become as knowledgeable and accomplished. The fact that Bronte chooses Jane to be inspired by female characters reinforces the points that women can be intelligent and independent, and at the same time inspire others to become better people. While some characters are used to represent what women should be, Bronte creates a sharp contrast between the character of Jane Eyre and other female characters in the novel to challenge Victorian the concept of the conventional woman. Women of that time were just now valued for their appearance, social and economic status. In many ways, Blanche Ingram (the woman whom Jane believed Mr Rochester loved) represents the ideal woman of the Vic torian era. She is beautiful, wealthy and had a well reputed family, contrasting with Jane, who is (in her own words) poor, obscure, plain, and little. However, plot of land the Victorian reader might be inclined to admire Blanche more than Jane, Jane feels that Miss Ingramwas too inferior to excite the feeling of jealousy because she had a graceful person but she was not genuineher mind was poor. The modern reader can spot that Jane, in contrast to Blanche is very intelligent, she has self worth and that she speaks her mind. Jane can also analyse ones character rather accurately, (as proved by Blanches rejection of Mr Rochester after she learns of his inferior economic status).Bronte is stressing that women must be admired for their character rather than their outward beauty that appearances can deceive and that women are worth more than social or economic status. Another contrast is formed between Jane and Bessie, the maid at Gateshead. While Jane rebels against the cruelty of he r aunt, Bessie advices her to make yourself agreeable to them. Bessie is used to represent Victorian women who give in to the expectations, while Jane represents the idea that women can express their views and stand up for themselves. While some may argue that Jane is a rebellious character, it is clear that she has control of her emotions, unlike Bertha, who lets her rage out (even though it is beyond her control).By using the character of Jane Eyre, Bronte presents a woman who is capable of being intelligent, independent, dignified and confident about her opinions even though she is not very winsome or wealthy. She uses this character to challenge some of the Victorian concepts concerning women and their positions, as well as to convey her less major themes about religion and class. In some passages, Bronte addresses these issues directly (in the conversation about Mr Rochester and Jane being equals) while she uses more subtle methods in other situations (while describing Blanche ). Bronte takes care not to make Jane a perfect person, but she incorporates flaws to allow readers to relate to her.She also uses other female characters to reinforce her points, by showing the qualities of some as well as showing the flaws in others. By doing so, Bronte shows that women can be equal to men, not only in intelligence, but in actions as well. She also portrays different types of women some who give in to the expectations of society, and some who stand up for their own beliefs. She outlines what she thinks a womans qualities should be and she encourages women to stand up their rights. Bronte successfully puts forward her points and she makes the reader understand her ideas by the portrayal of her characters, mainly females.

Prototyping is an attractive idea for complicated and large systems for which there is no manual process or existing system to help determining the requirements. In such situations letting the client plan with the prototype provides invaluable and intangible inputs which helps determining the requirements for the system. It is also an effective method to gift the feasibility of a certain approach. This might needed for novel systems where is not clear those constraints can be met or that algorithms can be developed to follow through the requirements. The process model of the prototyping approach is shown in the figure.Figure 3.2Prototyping Model of Software DevelopmentSystem AnalysisThe physical bo dy where all possible system requirement to be developed are identified. System requirement are those set of functional and non-functional that the end-user expects from the system. There are tools in gathering the requirements, consultations, interviews, research, etc. The goal of this phase is to determine how this requirement will be accommodated in the system. There should be broad communication between the customer and the developer. Finally, a requirement specification document is created to serves the purpose of guideline for the next phase of the model.System DesignOnce all the requirements have been collected and analyzed, this time is to identify the system will be constructed to carry out their task. The system has to be properly designed before any implementation is started. This phase is focused on the data requirements, software crook and the system interfacing. This phase is also will define the hardware and software needed. The aim of this phase is to generate a sys tem architecture document that serves as an input for the software design phase of the development, but also as an input for hardware design or selection activities.Respondents of the studyThe respondents of the study include the employees wherein the proponents prepare a set of carefully prepared and logically ordered questions. Pearl Harbor: Components, Causes, Events, Significance and Intelligence Failure

The driblet Harbor incident of 7 December, 1941, was a very great episode in the memorial of planetary affairs. The lacquerese attack on driblet Harbor dragged the unify States into the Second world War and it surely changed the trend of the fight. So languish coupled States remained removed from the War due to its avowed form _or_ system of government of isolation from atomic number 63an affairs. nevertheless the Pearl Harbor crisis directly fell upon it and natur on the wholey, as retaliation, the United States waged war against lacquer. collect to this event, the War which broke out in 3 September, 1939, in each casek a Global shape. Moreover, before the Pearl Harbor incident, it was in favor of the Axis powers. But the the Statesn involvement rapidly changed the tide and ultimately the United States and its Allis came out victorious. Tension between Japan and the United States It is a coordinal truth that the United States brocaded a strong protest against the M anchurian adventure of Japan and former similarly refused to accord official recognition to Manchukuo. The United States made it crystal overhaul that they would never diverge from their treaty rights and non recognize any change in China affected by uni subsequental action of Japan. The Nipp wizardse political science, in turned similarly resented this attitude of the United States resultantly the tension gradu completelyy evoked, and though the intensity rose from time to time, it began to mount at a steady base. It future(a) r separatelyes up the ladder in 1937 when Japan began her full scale invention in China. In short the Government of the United States which had all along s similarlyd for the rule of Open Door involving equality of opportunity could hardly be accepted to view it complacency Japans attempt to close that door by an imperialistic attitude disguised under(a) the schemes of new site and co-prosperity sphere. Thus when Japan began her full scale invention in 1937, American opinion mark Japan as a wonton aggressor against China. All though the United States refused to ratify the League of Nations due to some constitutional reasons, but it co-operated with the later in its efforts to restrain Japan and sorticipated in capital of Belgium conference of 1937, which was meant to minimize the difference between Japan and China. But the Nipp binglese government totally repudiated the views of the Brussels conference and definitely announced that they would not, by means, tolerate any shorts of interference by third party regarding in the issue of China and Japan. As concisely as the Second World War broke out the positions of Britain, France and Holland on their extra colonial possessions in East Asia became weak. Hence, at that time, Japan grabbed the opportunity to builds its possess hold in Eastern Asia. Japan sought to strengthen their positions through diplomatic preparations. In the mean time they had already sumed Germany and Italy in the anti-communist impact. In the course 1940 Japan signed a treaty of military alliance with these two powers. According to this treaty, these powers were mutually independent to one another, in terms of some(prenominal) military and economical affairs. The treaty further acknowledged that, in any one of these three countries were attacked by a power not yet conglomerate in the European war or the Sino Nipponese conflict they would unitedly side of meat the invader. Clearly, this treaty was a serious warning to the United States to remain in a neutral position. Another major diplomatic stamps led by Japan was their foreign minister, Matsouka, to Berlin in order to study the European situation. But genuinely the real purpose was to conclude an agreement with Russia. During his tour to Russia, Matsouka visited Moscow and entered into a neutrality pact with Soviet Union.By this pact both the powers agreed to respect each others territorial integrity and to remain in a neutra l position if either were attacked by a third power. Thus, with the finalization of all her diplomatic arrangement with Russia, Germany and Italy, Japan felt herself encouraged to push on her plans in the Far East. Due to all search diplomatic attempts made by Japan to impose their hegemony. On the Far East, the United States, resultantly, stiffen her attitude towards Japan. When Japan joined the Rome-Berlin Axis, then in the year 1940 United States imposed an ban on the export of scrap-iron and petroleum to Japan. But Washington refused to recognize the puppet government set up by Japan at Nan king in the year 1940 and kind of extended financial credit to Chiang Kai-sheks regime. But when the weak Vichy government of France gave permission to Japan for occupying Indo-China and to use its airfields, then in 1941 the United States captured Japanese goods and thereof, trade with Japan was made more difficult and made the later very angry. At that time the United States was the only power, who lay across the path of their imperialistic designs. That time Great Britain faced life and death struggle with Germany, and France and Netherlands were strongly dominated by Hitler. None of these powers were in the position to hold their colonial possession in East Asia. Hence the temptation to size them was very strong for Japan. But Japan faced only obstacle from the United States. So they determined to overcome from this obstacle. The government of Tojo sent a special envoy to the United States for a peaceful understanding settlement. But when the negotiation had scarcely begun the Japanese dropped bombs on American naval base at Pearl Harbor on 7th December, 1941.America suffered a massive loss for this incident. Similarly they bombed in Singapore, Guam and the strategic centers of the Philippines and announced war with the United States and Britain. On the following day the United States, Britain and the Netherlands East Indies decl ard war on Japan. The European w ar thus developed into global conflict. International effect Success of Japan The Japanese attack upon Pearl Harbor precipitated the United States into active belligerency and this inaugurated the peace-loving anatomy of the Second World War. The initial success of Japanese was phenomenal.Simultaneously with their attack on Pearl Harbor the Japanese struck at the American base Guam and arouse and captured the islands. Next they took Hong Kong from the British and seized the capital of Sarawak, a British protectorate in Borneo. They sank two big British battleships, Prince of Wales and Repulse off the eastern coast of Malaya. past they moved rapidly down the Malaya peninsula, slashing through impassable jungles, and received the unconditional surrender of Singapore with its impregnable naval base in the year of 1942. The Netherlands East Indies were attacked at various points.British and American ships, as well as Australian troops were rushed to the help of the Dutch forces. Bu t all these forces were dispel by the Japanese after a brief fighting. In the Philippines the local forces, helped by the Americans, offered a gallant resistance for about four months. However, all the resistance collapsed with the capture of island of Corregidor by the Japanese in May 1942. About this time, the Japanese had made themselves masters of Burma. Thailand aligned herself with the Japanese and, although theoretically independent, felt the unplumbed cave in of her powerful ally.In the North Pacific, Japan had established footholds in the Aleutian Islands and in the south west, they had seized a considerable portion of New Guinea and the Solomon Island. Thus, within six months after their attack on Pearl Harbor, the Japanese had wiped out the colonial possessions of the British and the Dutch in the far east and the south eastern Asia up to the boarders of India and had made themselves masters of the American outputs in the Western Pacific and the of the Philippines and American protg. It was an amazing record of victory at that time.Great East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere Japan had been demanding for sometime past of a new order in East Asia as a sort of justification for her invasion of China. Japan conquered and brought under her throw practically the whole of south eastern Asia. They expanded their conquest and declared their intention of setting up a Greater Asia co-prosperity sphere. Japanese new-made success against the western powers made them enable to assume the role of liberators of the volume of East Asia from the white mans yoke. They professed that their object was to eliminate the Anglo-American imperialism and to substitute in its place a self-sufficient economic system in which all the people would enjoy prosperity in common. The Greater East Asia was to be welded in concert into an economic whole in which Japan Manchukuo and parts of China would be the industrial centers and other countries, within the spheres, had to co-operate wi th them by providing raw materials. In this way, under Japanese direction, trade and commerce would flourish to the benefit of all the countries concerned. In the areas which they liberated from foreign rule, the Japanese set up independent Governments, but took care to select such(prenominal) collaborators as would govern along the lines laid down by them. In the name of economic development, they rather exploited the occupied regions for their own benefit instead than that of the conquered peoples. They posed as liberators, but in fact, they wanted to remain as conquerors and exploiters and sought to disguise their intention by setting up a excogitation of rule they had already oven in Manchuria and in occupied China. Causes of Japans Defeat Japan had begun well and achieved a series of astonishing success. But the strain of carrying on a far flung war began to tell upon her. As a matter of fact, she did not possess the reserves of men and material to meet the counter-attack of th e power which she had on purpose provoked. The United States with her enormous resources in men, money and material produced new ships, aero planes, guns and other arms and ammunitions of war in almost unlimited number and that with a facility which Japan could not anticipate. Hence in spite of the priority given to the war in Europe, is the use of American men and materials, the United States could quickly toy sufficient armed might to bear on the Japanese.Besides, the continued resistance of China was a serious drain of Japans men and money. It nearly handicapped her war efforts in other quarters and gave the Allies the much needed berathing spell. The first major attack on Japanese positions in the Pacific was made by the United States in 1942. In that year, a concentration on of the Japanese shipping was met by a force of American Aircraft under the command General McArthur of the North East Coast of Australia in the Coral Sea. In a six-day battle, the Japanese were defeated and turned back.Thereafter followed the naval battle of center(prenominal) in which the Japanese suffered heavy loss. This victory prevented the extension of Japanese power towards the South East Pacific. These were in the main defensive operations. But in gilded 1942, the United States took first step towards recovering the lost territories by an attempt to clear the Japanese forces out of the Solomon Island in South West Pacific. The Allied scheme was to capture the Japanese bases in that region and then to proceed North on the route to Tokyo.By severe amphibious warfare, the Americans secured a foothold on Gaudal Cannel, a strong Japanese airbase in the Solomons. This was the beginning of the Island-hoping strategy by which the Japanese outputs were conquered and converted into Allied bases, and then used as springboards for further attacks and progress towards Japan. By the spring of 1944, the Gilbert and Marshall Islands were captured from the Japanese and these successes ope ned the way to Saipan and Tinian in the Marians. These advances were made at a heavy cost for Japanese, fortified in pill-boxes and protected by mines, greeted the invaders with intense cross-fires.The advance through the Marians prepared the way for McArthurs re-conquest of the Philippines. His landing on the island of Leyte was fiercely contested by the Japanese. The Japanese fleets, which sought to bug the landing, suffered a misadventures defeat in the battle for the control of the Leyte-Gulf in October 1944. This battle, known as the Second Battle of the Philippine Sea, shattered the moral power of Japan. Henceforth, the Japanese wave continued to recede. The Philippines fell in July 1945. At the same time, island-hoping of the Allies continued. They stormed low Jima, one of the Bonnin Island and less than eight hundred miles from Tokyo, after a heavy aerial bombardment which lasted without intermission for two months. The next target was Okinawa, one of the islands in the Rq u kyu group, and a door step of Japan. Here was fought one of the bloodiest battle of the war. The Japanese casualties were very heavy, but they made effective use of suicide plans and hit from the air about two fifty enemy vessels of the classes including battleships and cruisers and took a heavy monetary value of American lives.By July 1945, an Anglo-American squadron was able to sail along the Japanese coast and dropped shells of Honshu. At the same time, the fighting air ships, the B 29s, hurled death and goal on the important cities of Japan which, thus, was rapidly nearing her doom. In July 1945, the representatives of the Allied powers (Great Britain, American, China and Russia) met in a conference at Potsdam and called upon the Japanese Government to proclaim the unconditional surrender of all Japanese armed forces, and to provide proper and adequate assurance of good faith in such actions. The alternative for Japan was prompt and utter destruction. The Japanese ignored the ultimatum and continued the loosing fight. Thereupon, on August 6, the Americans dropped an Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima which wiped out more than half of the city Hiroshima had ceased to exist. Three days after, i. e. on August 9, a second and more destructive Atomic Bombardment destroyed the city of Nagasaki, a ship building port and industrial center. On the following day, the Japanese Government sued the peace and Emperor Hirohito acquiesced in unconditional surrender on August 14, 1945. The Japanese dream of Empire suddenly vanished in the thin air (Shankar). Some questions But some questioned remain to be unanswered. First, why did Japan attack Pearl Harbor? Secondly, why did America join the war against Japan? Was not an ultimatum sufficient for the purpose? Was the Pearl Harbor incident real reason for the American involvement in Second World War? It is stark reality that the Paris Peace Conference had failed to satisfy the colonial ambition of both Italy and Japan. The spoils of colonial expansion were shared by Britain, France and America (Clement, C. ).Naturally it joined Italy and Germany and formed the Axis-Alliance for clearing a New Order. Soon it began to expand towards China and established the puppet government. It surely embitters its relations with America which too had some interests there. Moreover, America, had in the meantime occupied a vast area in the Pacific and Japans ambitions in the East was evidently against the American policy. For all these reasons, a confrontation was inevitable. But both of them remained passive onlookers at the first stage of the war. America, of course, had some sympathy for the Allies. But as the Monroe-Doctrine prevented it from taking a part in the League of Nations and similarly discouraged to be involved it in the post-war European politics and the war of 1939 (Mowat, R. B). But it was against the Axis power, because it feared that democracy might face a crisis if these powers won the war. One juncture pr esident Roosevelt even asked the Dictators to assure that they would not commit any aggression against 25 nations ranging from Finland to Iran (Sen, A). But as the pseud war was ensuring the Axis victory in an electric speed, America became very much anxious about the future. In order to help the Allies, it even changed its policy of hint and carry, and switched over to that of lend and lease. He even informed Mr. Churchill that he would be gradually provocative in spite of the avowed policy of neutrality. It is true that the Congress of America had so long kept in outside the European politics, because it was satisfied with the territorial settlement much in Europe (Tandon, M. P. ). But the rapid misfortune of the Allies to cope with the military brilliance of the Axis powers exchanged America that its interference was an avoidable necessity.Of course, Japan was guilty of an loose attack on it. But when Japan felt that Italy was reaping the harvest and Germany was breaking up t he Allied-empire like a castle of cards, it could not sit idly any more. On December 7, 1941, its aim for its suddenly attacked Pearl Harbor and, there, its war with America began on that day. It was surely a case of Japanese hypocrisies because it did it, while its diplomats were smilingly discussing minor difficulties in Washington (Wells, H. G. ). The American fleet was idling and unprepared and Japan did not declare a war. Naturally, America answered in a nomenclature of arms.Intelligence Crisis According to some historians, the Pearl Harbor affair was the outcome of an knowledge-failure on the part of America. Similarly, in spite of initial success, Japan pathetically lost the war mainly because of its failure in the intelligence operations. To begin with, the Pearl Harbor affair is regarded as the worst case of American military intelligence. First, for a long time, the relationship between the United States and Japan was fast-deteriorating, but the American naval intellige nce did not even look at the minimum amount of strategic or tactical speculation about it.It simply thought that, Japan might attack Thailand at that time. As Philippines were the strong hold in the Pacific, the American intelligence apprehended that Japan might launch an attack on that island. In short, Pearl Harbor was out of American calculation of any probable Japanese aggression. Secondly, another problem was that America lacked Human intelligence on Japan. America had a few geisha girls on the payroll, but no agents in the Japanese Elite or military hierarchy. This is another reason for the American intelligence problems regarding any probable Japanese attack in the Harbor.Thirdly, America came out self-made in breaking the Japanese code, but what they were really intercepting was some diplomatic and espionage- development, nothing off the nature of Japanese military plans or war-targets. Japan also tactfully changed their codes some days before the Pearl Harbor affair and t he American intelligence failed to cope with it. The American fleets stationed at the Harbor to protect it, were too weak to face the Japanese heavy naval power. These fleets were inferior in quality and, in such case, a combat with the Japanese navy would have been a mere suicidal attempt. These fleets were neither capable of countering a air-attack nor a naval attack. Clearly, the American intelligence had least expectations for any attack on the Pearl Harbor. On Japans part, similarly, there were some intelligence failures. The Japanese very tactfully attacked Pearl Harbor and it was a grand success for the former. But due to lack of proper intelligence service, it could not keep up the trend of its initial victory. First, its intelligence actually underestimated the American potentiality in the economic and military affairs.Economically, America was the richest country of the world and its industrial development was enough to supply the war materials which were enough to bring Ja pan under control. Moreover, as war started, America stopped all exports to Japan, particularly iron and steel, which materially affected Japans war preparations. Thus, it was a dismal failure of Japanese intelligence. Secondly, the Japanese also failed to hit the strategic targets of America. Particularly oil-depots, large ammunitions depots etc remained outside the Japanese military target.Japanese intelligence actually failed to supply its air force the correct entropy regarding the important places which, militarily were to be regarded as of basic importance for America. Finally, another fatal flaw of the Japanese intelligence service was that it failed to supply the correct information to the military department about the public moral which was galvanized during the war. The people so long remained isolated from European affairs and perhaps, the Japanese intelligence thought that such peace-loving people could hardly fight against such a military debacle. But after the initial shock of Pearl Harbor, both the military and the ordinary people united like a solid phalanx which, ultimately brought out American victory over Japan. Was it really an Intelligence Failure? But one point is yet to be discussed with all seriousness. Was the Pearl harbor-crisis an outcome of the failure of American Intelligence Service? As Clyde P. H. observes, Responsibility for the Pearl Harbor disaster presents a complex problem with which historians will wrestle for years to come (Clyde, 614). It is really a very complex question on which the historians have quarreled with one another. It is true that the growing power of Hitler convinced the Americans that their own security was linked up with the war fortunes of the Allied powers and that Hitler, in full of control of European continent, would head to the conquest of America. As Keswani K. B. points out, On September 16, 1940, Congress passed the Compulsory Military Service and Training Law whereby conscription was introduced f or the first time in the hi report card of the country (Saha). Thus, it is evident that, America was preparing for the impending war. But, surely, it was seeking for an excuse. When Japan, the Asiatic ally of Hitler, bombards Pearl Harbor, America exactly found an opportunity to join the war. Whether it was a failure of intelligence service or not, is obviously a crucial question. As Clyde points out, by July 1946, there had already been eight official investigations yet it seemed that the full story had not been revealed. The earliest investigation, made by the then secretary of the Navy, Frank Knox and Associate Supreme Court Justice, Owen Roberts, laid the major responsibility on the Pearl Harbor commanders, Admiral Husband, S. Kimmel and General Walter C.Short. But later investigations, including that of a joint Congressional Committee, laid less blame on the commanders and more upon departments and personalities in the Government at Washington. Whatever the ultimate verdict of history may be, the Pearl Harbor attack was of tremendous importance not merely as a military catastrophe, but also in its political and intelligence implications. Most probably, it was not a matter of failure in the intelligence service. There are both immediate and long range reasons suggesting that the attack should have been anticipated.J. C. Grew, the American Ambassador at Japan, had warned the State Department, eleven months in advance that if war came, Japan might open hostilities with an attack on Pearl Harbor. From September onwards, intercepted Japanese messages revealed a sharp interest in the location of ships at Pearl Harbor. Grew had also given repeated warning that the Japanese might depend on surprise attack at several points particularly at Pearl Harbor. Now, it is a question, why did the American Government not take sufficient measures in order to prevent such a naval onslaught. It is to be remembered that the casualties were as careen as the damage of the fleet 2343 dead, 1272 wounded and 960 missing. At least nineteen ships were totally wrecked by the Japanese attack. The reason of this catastrophe is perhaps not the failure of the intelligence service it was probably an outcome of a deliberate policy of American Government. Conclusion History has not as yet exposed the full explanation of Pearl Episode. So theories and hypothesis were abundant. Most probably, America was awaiting an opportunity to join the war. When the Pearl Harbor incident took place, President Roosevelt took the opportunity to convince the Congress and the American people that a war with Japan was inevitable. So, some historians like Clyde, believed that it was planned and plotted by the American Government in order to find out a scope to join the war. In this way, the President surmounted the obstacle raised by the Monroe Doctrine in joining the European politics and discarding the doctrine of isolation from international affairs.

Health Care Delivery System in the United States

Abstract The united States wellness c atomic number 18 deli truly system is comprised of a complex, un nonionized and flawed wellness system, comp ard to that of Australias wellness fretting system. The quadruplet components of the inefficient system in the join States atomic number 18 categorized into a quad-functional model. Financing, restitution, deliver and feement argon the four flawed components. Australias efficient and organized system is base on a national health system, which consists of one of import agency the government. The United States health system is comprised of unnumberable public and private entities.Australias health sustainment system is superior to that of the United States. Table of Contents Title scalawag1 Abstract 2 Table of Contents3 Introduction. 4 References 9 Introduction The quality of health care is vital to a nations well being. The United States is comprised of one of the most complex health care delivery systems throughout the world. The complexity of the United States health care delivery is comprised of immeasurable individuals and organizations, which include both public and private entities. Unlike the health care delivery system of Australia, the network of interrelated components of the U. S. health care system does not work together in an organized and efficient manner. Some of the components tend to overlap one another. The United States health care delivery system is based on the quad-function model, which consists of four components that are categorized into financing, insurance, delivery and payment. The fact that the United States health care system is not governed by a single of import agency, opposed to Australias national health system, countless Americans endure physical and emotional suffering from the inefficiency of the system. Financing is one of the most important components of health care delivery system in the United States. This component pertains to the methods of paying for costly diag nostic tests, procedures, hospitals visits and treatment. Demand and supply has inflated the cost of health related services.Paying for health services is extremely costly without health insurance. Thanks to the a majority of employment establishments, most employed Americans, as well as their dependent children and spouses, are provided affordable health insurance. Although most employed Americans are provided health insurance, the United States health delivery system is split up and lacks to provide much needed health insurance for the majority of the unemployed American population. The second component of the quad-functional model pertains to insurance.Ownership of a health insurance plan protects individuals against health related issues. Insurance is very beneficial during occurrences when needing costly health care services. Insurance policies also determine the extent of health services the insured individuals are entitled to receive. Most insurance policies specify details of the health care policy holders are entitled to receive. Unlike Australia, the citizens of America, except for the elderly who receive Medicare, must obtain their own insurance. The one-third component of the United States quad-functional model pertains to delivery. In terms of delivery, the quad-functional model refers to the proviso of health care services, along with the receipt of insurance payments for the health related services received. The payments are paid to providers who deliver health care supplies and services. The recipients of payment consist of doctors, therapists, hospitals, diagnostics and imaging clinics, and suppliers of health care related equipment. The difference between the health care systems of the United States versus the health care system of Australia is that Australias healthcare system is based on a national health care program. The superiorly organized and efficient system mainly consists of private practitioners (Hall 1999 Podger 1999). The fourth and final component of the United States quad-functional model pertains to payment. The payment function deals with reimbursement to providers for services delivered. Reimbursement is the determination of how much to pay for a certain service. The fact that Australias health care system is based on a national health care program, individuals who receive health related services are not overwhelmed with stress of worrying about making payment the providers of health services.Australias government handles all aspects of health care. The four components of the United States health care system dramatically vary from the components of the health care system in Australia. The health care system of Australia is classified as a national health care system. Unlike the United States, Australias health care system is referred to as a single-payer system or a system that is governed by a single central agency the Australian government. The government finances health care through the means of ge neral taxes, withal though health care is delivered by private providers. The benefit of a central agency governing the health care system is that it eliminates the complexity by eliminating components that exists in the multi-payer system of the United States health care system. Although the citizens of the United States are free to choose the method of obtaining health care, countless individuals are left without all means of health care. There are many negative characteristics that differentiate the United States health care delivery system from that of other countries, such as Australia. These characteristics result in fragments and inconsistencies within the system. The United States health care system is flawed based on the fact that it is not governed by a central agency, health care services are limited to the confined terms of the insurance policy, multiple public and private entities results in lack of efficiency, and extremely high cost of health care services. Australia spends 8. 7 percent of its GDP on health care and covers everyone, irrespective of their employment status ( gift 1987 Lapsley 1987) Due to the complexity and inefficiency of the United States health care delivery system, many people in the U. S. go without much needed health care. The extremely high cost in the U. S. results in countless uninsured American from having the financial ability to receive access to health care services. More than two-fifths of lower-income adults in the U. S. said they went without needed care because of be in the past year (Davis 2007 Schoen 2007 Holmgren Shea 2007). The uninsured have options to receive services at county hospitals and government establishments, but their quality of services is much lower. The finding from my in depth research indicates that many changes need to be implemented into the health are delivery system in the United States, to improve the complex and fragmented system. The private health insurance covers care received in pri vate hospitals (Australian Government 2004). To improve quality of life, the system in the United States should be changed from a multi-payer to a single-payer system, which is classified as a national health system or NHS. Aquiring private health insurance is voluntary, but strongly encouraged by the Australian government through tax subsidies for purchasers and tax penalties for non-purchasers (Healy 2002).The government go out manage the overall infrastructure of the health system, without any regard to capitalism. All entities who set about personal financial gain will not be included in the NHS. This change will terminate most of the components that bring injustice to the citizens who are excluded, which mostly consists of unemployed individuals. The United States economy is driven by capitalism, where the where motives behind actions derive from pursuit of monetary gain. In a loosely organized system, countless entities and individuals seek monetary gain, without regard or c ompassion for human life.Greed is the main element in the United States complex health care delivery system. In 1998, the death rate pertaining to the health care delivery system was 25 to 50 percent higher in the United States than in Australia. Australia ranks highest on sound lives, compared to the United States (Davis 2007 Schoen 2007 Holmgren Shea 2007). The implementation of a national health care system, similar to that of Australia, will foster ethical practices and equality for all citizens of the United States. This change will impact health professionals greatly. Most likely their salaries will be reduced drastically and their employers will be the national government. In my opinion, most physicians are overpaid currently. toll inflation based on a free market economy will be more controlled. References Australian Government, Department of Health and Ageing (2004). Review of The Drunkard’s Walk †How Randomness Rules Our Lives by Mlodinow Essay

Read the book The Drunkards Walk How Randomness Rules Our Lives by Mlodinow and pay special attend to the fol let outing questions. Some of these questions may appear on quizzes and exams.Chapter 1 Peering through the Eyepiece of Randomness1. Explain the phenomenon r constantlyse toward the mean.In any series of ergodic events an extraordinary event is near likely to be followed, due unadulteratedly to receive, by a more ordinary unity.2. What factors de considerationine whether a person entrust be successful in c atomic number 18er, investment, etc.? Success in our careers, in our investments, and in our life decisions, both major and minoris as much the go away of random factors as the result of skill, preparedness, and hard work.3. Was Paramounts firing of Lansing the correct decision? After she was fired, Paramount films market share rebounded. No, Lansing was fired beca pulmonary tuberculosis of industrys misunderstanding of randomness and not because of her drive flawed decision making. Lansing had good luck at the beginning and bad luck at the end.Chapter 2 The Laws of Truths and Half-Truths1. What coined the term luck, or probabilis? (Latin probabilis credible) Ciceros principal legacy in the field of randomness is the term he used, probabilis, which is the origin of the term we employ to twenty-four hours. barely it is nonpareil p subterfuge of the Ro homophile code of law, the Digest, compiled by Emperor Justinian in the sixth century, that is the first document in which probability appears as an foreveryday term of art2. What is the rule for compounding probabilities? How to compute probability that one event and another event both happening? According to the correct manner of compounding probabilities, not only do both half proofs yield less than a whole certainty, but no finite number of partial proofs will ever add up to a certainty because to compound probabilities, you dontadd them you multiply. That brings us to our next law , the rule for compounding probabilities If cardinal possible events, A and B, are independent, then the probability that both A and B will occur is equal to the product of their individual probabilities.3. Is the Roman rule of half proofs two half proofs constitute a whole proof, correct? What do two half proofs constitute by the rule of compounding probabilities? 4. Suppose an airline has 1 seat left on a flight and 2 passengers have yet to show up. If there is a 2 in 3 chance a passenger who books a seat will arrive to claim it, what is the probability that the airline will have to deal with an unhappy customer? What is the probability that neither customer will show up? What is the assumption? What is the probability that either both passengers or neither passenger will show up? 5. In DNA testing for legal trial, there is 1 in 1 billion fortuityal match and 1 in 100 laberror match. What is the probability that there is both an accidental match and a lab error? What is the proba bility that one error or the other occurred? Which probability is more relevant?Chapter 3 Finding Your Way through a Space of Possibilities1. What is sample space?2. What is Cardanos law of the sample space? (P. 62)3. In the Monty H from each one problem, why should the player switch after the hosts intervention? Chapter 4 Tracking the Pathways to Success1. The grand duke of Tuscanys problem what is the probability of obtaining 10 when you ca-ca three dice? What about 9?2. What is Cardanos law of the sample space?3. What is the application of Pascals triangle?4. For the Yankees-Braves World Series example, for the rest 5 games, what is the probability that the Yankees win 2 games? 1 game?5. What is mathematical expectation?6. Explain why a state lottery is equivalent to Of all those who pay the dollar or two to enter, most will receive nothing, one person will receive a fortune, and one person will be put to death in a violent manner?Chapter 5 The Dueling Laws of Large and Small Numbers?1. What is Benfords law? Discuss about applications in business. 2. Explain the difference between the frequency interpretation and the subjective interpretation of randomness.3. Do psychics exist?4. What is tolerance of error, tolerance of uncertainty, statistical significance? 5. outline some applications from the book of the law of large numbers and the law of small numbers.Chapter 6 Bayess guess1. Two-daughter problemIn a family with two children, what are the chances that both children are girls? autonomic nervous system 25%In a family with two children, what are the chances, if one of the children is a girl, that both children are girls? Ans 33%In a family with two children, what are the chances, if one of the children is a girl named Florida, that both children are girls? Ans 50%2. How to apply Bayess Theory to determine car insurance rates? Ans Models employed to determine car insurance rates include a mathematical function describing, per unit of driving time, y our personal probability of having zero, one, or more accidents. Consider, for our purposes, a simplified model that places everyone in one of two categories high attempt, which includes drivers who mean(a) at to the lowest degree one accident each year, and low risk, which includes drivers who average less than one. If, when you apply for insurance, you have a driving record that stretches back twenty years without an accident or one that goes back twenty years with thirty-seven accidents, the insurance telephoner can be pretty sure which category to place you in.But if you are a new driver, should you be classified as low risk (a kid who obeys the speed limit and volunteers to be the designated driver) or high risk (a kid who races down Main Street swigging from a half-empty $2 bottle of Boones Farm apple wine-colored)? Since the company has no entropy on youno idea of the position of the first ballit might assign you an equal priorprobability of being in either group, or it might use what it knows about the general population of new drivers and start you off by guessing that the chances you are a high risk are, say, 1 in 3. In that case the company would model you as a hybridone-third high risk and two-thirds low riskand charge you one-third the price it charges sorry drivers plus two-thirds the price it charges low risk drivers. Then, after a year of observationthat is, after one of Bayess second balls has been thrownthe company can employ the new data send to reevaluate its model, adjust the one-third and two-third proportions it previously assigned, and recalculate what it ought to charge. If you have had no accidents, the proportion of low risk and low price it assigns you will increase if you have had two accidents, it will decrease. The precise size of the adjustment is given by Bayess theory. In the aforementioned(prenominal) manner the insurance company can periodically adjust its assessments in later years to reflect the fact that you were accident-free or that you twice had an accident date driving the wrong way down a one way street, holding a cell phone with your left hand and a ringing with your right. That is why insurance companies can give out good driver discounts the absence of accidents elevates the posterior probability that a driver belongs in a low-risk group.3. hazard of correct diagnosisSuppose in 1989, statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show about 1 in 10,000 heterosexual non-IV-drug-abusing white male Americans who got tested were infected with HIV. Also suppose about 1 person out of every 10,000 will test positive due to the presence of the infection. Suppose 1 in 1,000 will test positive even if not infected with HIV (false positive). What is the probability that a patient who tested positive is in fact healthy?Ans So if you test 10 000 people you will have 11 positives 1 who is really infected, 10 are false positives. Of the 11 positive testees, only 1 has HIV, that is, 1/11. Therefore the probability that a positive testee is healthy = 10 / 11 = 90.9%4. O. J. Simpson trialAccording to FBI statistics, 4 million women are battered annually by husbands and boyfriends in U.S. and in 1992 1,432 or 1 in 2500 were killed by their husbands or boyfriends. The probability that a man who batters his married woman will go on to kill her is 1 in 2500. The probability that a battered wife who was murdered was murdered by her maltreater is 90%. Which probability is relevant to the O. J. trial? What is the fundamental difference between probability and statistics?Ans 1) Relevant one is the probability that a battered wife who was murdered was murdered by her abuser = 90%. 2)the fundamental difference between probability and statistics the former concerns predictions based on fixed probabilities the latter concerns the conclusion of those probabilities based on observed data.Chapter 7 Measurement and the Law of Errors1. ElectionWhy did the author argue that when elections come out extremely close, perhaps we ought to shoot them as is, or flip a coin, rather than conducting recount after recount? Ans (pg= 127 and 128) Elections, like all measurements, are imprecise, and so are the recounts, so when elections come out extremely close, perhaps we ought to accept them as is, or flip a coin, rather than conducting recount after recount.2. What is mathematical statistics?Ans numeral statistics, provides a set of tools for the interpretation of the data that arise from observation and experimentation. Statisticians sometimes view the growth of modern science as revolving around that development, the creation of a theory of measurement. But statistics also provides tools to address real-world issues, such as the effectiveness of drugs or the popularity of politicians, so a proper understanding of statistical reasoning is as useful in everyday life as it is in science.3. Wine tastingShould we believe in wine ratings from those wine experts? W hy or why not?Two groups wine tasting experts produce the following results (a) 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90(b) 80 81 82 87 89 89 90 90 90 91 91 94 97 99 100Compare the two groups of data. (pg 134)From the theoretical viewpoint, there are many reasons to question the significance of wine ratings. For one thing, taste perception depends on a complex interaction between taste and olfactory stimulation. Strictly speaking, the sense of taste comes from five types of receptor cells on the tongue salty, sweet, sour, bitter, and umami. The last responds to certain amino acid compounds (prevalent, for example, in soy sauce). But if that were all there was to taste perception, you could mimic everythingyour favorite steak, baked potato, and apple pie feast or a nice spaghetti Bologneseemploying only table salt, sugar, vinegar, quinine, and monosodium glutamate.Fortunately there is more to gluttony than that, and that is where the sense of fume comes in. The sense of smell e xplains why, if you take two identical solutions of sugar water and add to one a (sugar-free) essence of strawberry, it will taste sweeter than the other.15 The perceived taste of wine arises from the do of a stew of between 600 and 800 volatile organic compounds on both the tongue and the nose.16 Thats a problem, given that studies have shown that even flavor-trained professionals can seldom reliably identify more than three or four components in a mixture4. Can professional mutual fund managers (stock chargeers) beat students who pick stocks by tossing coins?5. What is the margin of error in a examine? Should variation within the margin of error be ignored in a poll?Ans 5% (or 3.5%). Yes, any variation within the margin of error should be ignored in a poll6. What is the central limit theorem?Ans The probability that the sum of a large number of independent random factors will take on any given value is distributed according to the conventionalismdistribution.Chapter 8 The Ord er in Chaos1. Who are the founders of statistics?Graunt and his friend William Petty have been called the founders of statistics, a field sometimes considered lowbrow by those in pure mathematics owing to its focus on mundane practical issues, and in that sense John Graunt in particular makes a fitting founder.2. How did Graunt estimate the population of London in 1662? What is Graunts legacy? From the bills of mortality, Graunt knew the number of births. Since he had a rough idea of the fertility rate, he could infer how many women were of childbearing age. That datum allowed him to guess the total number of families and, using his own observations of the mean size of a London family, thereby estimate the citys population. He came up with 384,000 previously it was believed to be 2 million.Graunts legacy was to demonstrate that inferences about a population as a whole could be made by carefully examining a limited sample of data. But though Graunt and others made valiant efforts to learn from the data through the application of simple logic, most of the datas secrets awaited the development of the tools created by Gauss, Laplace, and others in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.3. How did Poincare show the baker was shortchanging customers? French mathematician Jules-Henri Poincar employed Qutelets method to apprehend a baker who was shortchanging his customers. At first, Poincar, who made a habit of picking up a loaf of bread each day, noticed after deliberateness his loaves that they averaged about 950 grams instead of the 1,000 grams advertised. He complained to the authorities and afterward received bigger loaves.Still he had a hunch that something about his bread wasnt kosher. And so with the patience only a famousor at least tenuredscholar can afford, he carefully weighed his bread every day for the next year. Though his bread now averaged closer to 1,000 grams, if the baker had been honestly handing him random loaves, the number of loaves hea vier and lighter than the mean should havediminished following the bellshaped ideal of the error law. Instead, Poincar found that there were too few light loaves and a surplus of heavy ones. He concluded that the baker had not ceased baking scraggy loaves but instead was seeking to placate him by always giving him the largest loaf he had on hand.4. Are all data in night club such as financial realm normal? (Yes) Are film tax data normal? (No) For one thing, not all that happens in society, curiously in the financial realm, is governed by the normal distribution. For example, if film revenue were normally distributed, most films would earn near some average amount, and two-thirds of all film revenue would fall within a standard deviation of that number. But in the film business, 20 percent of the movies bring in 80 percent of the revenue. such(prenominal) hit-driven businesses, though thoroughly unpredictable, follow a far different distribution, one for which the concepts of mea n and standard deviation have no meaning because there is no typical executing, and megahit outliers, which in an ordinary business might occur only once every few centuries, happen every few years.5. Who dubbed the phenomenon regression toward the mean? Explain its meaning. Galton dubbed the phenomenonthat in linked measurements, if one measured quantity is far from its mean, the other will be closer to its meanregression toward the mean.6. Who coined the term the coefficient of correlation? Explain its meaning. Galton coined the term the coefficient of correlation .The coefficient of correlation is a number between 1 and 1 if it is near 1, it indicates that two variables are linearly link up a coefficient of 0 means there is no relation.7. Discuss the applications of the chi-square test?(Pg 165 166 167) Pearson invented a method, called the chi-square test, by which you can determine whether a set of data actually conforms to the distribution you believe it conforms to.8. What i s statistical physics?James Clerk Maxwell and Ludwig Boltzmann, two of the founders of statistical physics. statistical physics was aimed at explaining a phenomenon called Brownian motion. Statistical physics is the branch of physics that uses methods of probability theory and statistics, and particularly the mathematical tools for dealing with large populations and approximations, in solving physical problems.9. What is a drunkards walk or random walk? The random motion of molecules in a fluid can be viewed, as a metaphor for our own paths through life, and so it is worthwhile to take a little time to give Einsteins work a closer look. According to the atomic picture, the fundamental motion of water molecules is chaotic. The molecules fly first this way, then that, moving in a straight line only until deflected by an encounter with one of their sisters. As mentioned in the Prologue, this type of pathin which at various points the direction changes randomlyis often called a drunkard s walk, for reasons obvious to anyone who has ever enjoyed a few too many martinis (more sober mathematicians and scientists sometimes call it a random walk).Chapter 9 Illusions of Patterns and Patterns of Illusion1. What caused the table to move, spirit?not a direct consequence of reality but rather an act of imagination.2. What is significance testing?Significance testing, was developed in the 1920s by R. A. Fisher, one of the great statistician for scientific research. It is a formal procedure for calculating the probability of our having observed what we observed if the hypothesis we are testing is true. If the probability is low, we reject the hypothesis. If it is high, we accept it.3. Why did Apple founder Steve Jobs made the ipods shuffling feature less random to make it feel more random?Spencer-Browns point was that there is a difference between a process being random and the product of that process appearing to be random. Apple raninto that issue with the random shuffling method it initially employed in its iPod music players true randomness sometimes produces repetition, but when users heard the same song or songs by the same artist played back-to-back, they believed the shuffling wasnt random. And so the company made the feature less random to make it feel more random, give tongue to Apple founder Steve Jobs.4. Suppose there are 1000 mutual fund managers picking stock for 15 consecutive years by each tossing a coin once a year. If a head is obtained, he/she beats the market (a fund manager either beats the market average or not). What is the probability that someone among the 1000 who would toss a head in each of the 15 years? From Nobel Prize-winning economist Merton Miller If there are 10,000 people looking at the stocks and trying to pick winners, one in 10,000 is going score, by chance alone, and thats all thats going on.Its a game, its a chance operation, and people think they are doing something purposeful but theyre really not. Ans The chan ces that, after fifteen years, a particular coin tosser would have tossed all heads are then 1 in 32,768. But the chances that someone among the 1,000 who had started tossing coins in 1991 would have tossed all heads are much higher, about 3 percent.5. What is confirmation bias? When we are in the grasp of an illusionor, for that matter, whenever we have a new ideainstead of prying for ways to prove our ideas wrong, we usually attempt to prove them correct. Psychologists call this the confirmation bias, and it presents a major impediment to our ability to break free from the misinterpretation of randomness.Chapter 10 The Drunkards Walk1. What is the butterfly effect? The butterfly effect, based on the implication that atmospheric changes so small they could have been caused by a butterfly flapping its wings can have a large effect on subsequent global weather patterns. 2. Can past performance of mutual fund managers predict future performance? No.

Dulce Et Decorum

Dulce et Decorum Est Wilfred Owens verse is settled in the battlefield of World War I. It features a group of soldiers who come out to be returning to camp after a long day at war. Some of these men had lost their boots and other articles of clothing. When all of a explosive gas shells drop near them and they all went to put on their gas masks in fear of dying from the gas. The narrator thought everyone had got their masks on, but then he still heard one of his friends yelling and screaming in agony. He watched a member of his crew die from these gas shells and he could do zipper about it.Then the narrator goes forward in time, sometime after he has returned from war, and he can non get the show of his friend dying out of his flip. He eer thinks about that night and he even dreams about his comrades deaths. He also speaks of the people coming home that are desperate for honor as the return home from this war. Throughout this poem there are many things about it that allows the poem to be so supremacyful. The word prize that Wilfred Owen chose to substance abuse in Dulce et Decorum Est, really set a mood and gave spectacular imagery, which led for the success of the poem. The structure that Wilfred Owen used for Dulce et Decorum Est is another factor that helped the poem become very successful. These aspects of Dulce et Decorum Est really allow Wilfred Owens poem to be seen as a very successful poem. Wilfred Owens word cream without Dulce et Decorum Est set this poem up for success. Wilfred Owens superb description in Dulce et Decorum Est allows the reader to get an image in their head that helps them understand the poem even more.Throughout Dulce et Decorum Est, Wilfred Owen shocks the reader with his description of the events that are happening. For example, Bent double, like old beggars under sacks, Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge. This puts the image of tired soldiers marching through some sort of nasty, muddy area aft er being out fighting in war. Also, his word choice is different from other poems because of the gruesome details he uses in Dulce et Decorum Est. This is different because a lot of poems do not use the detail he does to express this terrible war.For example, And floundring like a man in fire or lime. Dim through the misty panes and thick green light, As under a green sea, I saw him drowning. This is saying that the gas is a terrible death, like being set on fire, he does not get any air to your lungs, only gas, as if the soldier was drowning in water. Wilfred Owens word choice and description in Dulce et Decorum Est are wide factors on why the poem is such a success. The structure that Wilfred Owen used for Dulce et Decorum Est push the poem in the right direction to become a success. The style Wilfred Owen wrote in for Dulce et Decorum Est is similar to the French ballade poetic crap. By using a similar style like the French ballade poetic form and then breaking the conventions of pattern and rhyming, Owens makes the reader notice the deranged and disruptive events being told in the poem. Owen breaks the poem into two different part, each consisting of fourteen lines. In the first part of the Dulce et Decorum Est, Owens writes it in the present as all of the action of this event happens and him and his crew are reacting to the gas shells going off round them.In second par of the poem, Owens writes it in the future of the event that. The second part looks back to draw a lesson from what happened at the start. The two fourteen line parts of Dulce et Decorum Est again shows a formal poetic style, but it is a broken and unsettling version of this form. The structure Wilfred Owen chose gave this poem a different look at a formal poetic style and is what made this poem successful. There are many things that can make a poem a great and successful poem. The many things that Wilfred Owen did with Dulce et Decorum Est to make the poem what it is today is really ama zing. The word choice Owens used to show detail allowed readers to get an image of the horrible event that happen to the soldier and his crew. The broken structure of the French ballade form that Owens used with this poem set put it to the level of success the poem has reached. These things that Wilfred Owens did with this piece of work shows how to make a successful poem.
